HP Pavilion DV2

Labels: | 0 comments»

Until very recently, those lusting after a notebook with a 12-inch display, sturdy build, and ultraportable form factor were expected to shell out close to $2,000. And let's face it; many consumers can't afford to spend that kind of money right now. Feel free to send HP a thank you note for its Pavillion dv2, which will start at $699. While similarly priced 12- and 13-inch notebooks were annouced at the show, the 3.8 pound and less-than-an-inch thick dv2 feels nothing like a budget notebook with its solid lid (available in both black and white) and sturdy construction. It's also quite a looker with a nice glossy surface and attractive etchings on its palm rest.

Enabling it to pull off its affordable price is AMD's new Yukon Platform or Athlon Neo processor which was designed to not break the bank but make notebooks this size exteremely thin (think a netbook type device with a larger screen and more powerful performance). With its 1.6-GHz AMD Athlon Neo MV-40 CPU paired with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3410 graphics the notebook can handle high definition content (an external Blu-ray drive will be avilable) and a good deal of multitasking. Rounding out the impressive notebook is SRS premium sound, integrated webcam, and support for up to 4GB of RAM, 500GB hard drives, and mobile broadband options. HP's dv2 leads the pack of a new type of affordable ultraportable and we expect the other notebook manufacters to follow suit.

oFono - Collaboration from Intel & Nokia

Labels: | 0 comments»

Intel and Nokia have announced a joint partnership today to develop oFono, an open-source telephony solution. The oFono software stack is GPLv2 licensed and includes a high-level D-Bus API for use by other telephony applications and a low-level API for communicating with cellular modems and other devices.

According from oFono official website, oFono.org is a place to bring developers together around designing an infrastructure for building mobile telephony (GSM/UMTS) applications. oFono.org is licensed under GPLv2, and it includes a high-level D-Bus API for use by telephony applications of any license. oFono.org also includes a low-level plug-in API for integrating with open source as well as third party telephony stacks, cellular modems and storage back-ends. The plug-in API functionality is modeled on public standards, in particular 3GPP TS 27.007 "AT command set for User Equipment (UE)."

oFono aims to make writing telephony applications as easy as possible. Thus oFono will take care of the core logic, including things necessary for standards compliance. This will allow application writers to focus on what they should be doing: presentation aspects and funky animated UIs.

Nokia E52

Labels: | 0 comments»

Nokia's E-Series handsets tend to be unexciting but practical business workhorses. The new Nokia E52 certainly fits into this category - it's a phone that looks unexciting on the surface, but it is much more impressive when you look more closely at what it can actually do. First the headlines: the Nokia E52 is an S60 smartphone with a 2.4" 240 x 320 pixel display, a 3.2 megapixel "full focus" camera with LED flash, 3.5G support and WiFi, a multimedia player, an FM radio, microSD expandable memory, Bluetooth and a standard 3.5mm audio socket. In fact, the E52 is almost completely identical to the recently announced Nokia E55 apart from the more traditional keypad. Delve a little deeper and some of the E52's strengths become apparent. The large 1500 mAh battery gives up to 6 hours talktime and 18 days standby on 3G, and a whopping 8 hours talktime and 28 days standby time on GSM. Then there's the handsets's HSDPA support with maximum download speeds of up to 10 Mbps, plus maximum HSUPA upload speeds of up to 2 Mbps. Of course, your carrier will need to support those speeds.. but potentially it means that the Nokia E52 can pull down data quicker than many ADSL connections. One other useful feature is the inclusion of a 1GB memory card as standard, and the standard sales package also includes a data cable and wired headset.

The E52 also comes with GPS plus a compass, and the Nokia Maps application is preloaded. You could also potentially use Google Maps or another S60 based navigation system, although the 2.4" screen is not really well suited to use as an in-car satnav.

Included is support for several push email protocols plus various document viewers and other applications. If you really need to know about the OS, then the E52 has the S60 Edition 3.2.3 UI running on top of Symbian OS 9.3.

T-Mobile plans to launch multiple Android devices

Labels: | 0 comments»

T-Mobile USA is planning to launch multiple Android devices with three manufacturer partners this year, possibly including a low-end handset powered by the mobile operating system. T-Mobile Chief Technology Officer Cole Brodman discussed the plans with GigaOM on Friday.

Brodman also hinted optimism about Android-powered netbooks, saying he'd seen demo versions of Android netbooks manufactured by Hewlett-Packard and Dell.

There are rumors that T-Mobile will launch the HTC Magic this year, and the company has seen success with its G1 Android-powered smartphone -- it has sold 1 million of the smartphone devices to date.

HP Mini 2140

Labels: | 0 comments»

Even though the HP Mini 1000 is only a few months old, Hewlett-Packard was actually an early player in the Netbook field. The company's business system side came up with the Mini-note 2133 in spring 2008, with a solid, brushed-metal chassis and a nearly full-size keyboard. Unfortunately, this predated Intel's Atom CPU, and rather than using the Celeron processor that came with the very first Netbooks, HP went with an underpowered Via C7-M, which pretty much killed any chance it had of becoming a mainstream product.

Now that the plastic-clad, Atom-powered consumer version has become a hit, HP's business side is taking another crack at the Netbook market with a radically updated version, the $499 HP Mini 2140.

It keeps the aluminum construction and big keyboard, but updates the components to an Intel Atom CPU, and adds an accelerometer for the hard drive, and a full ExpressCard/54 slot--a Netbook first (Lenovo's S10 has a smaller Express Card/34 slot).

Thanks to those added features--and some concerns about the added weight aside--the 2140 is currently our favorite Netbook less than $500.

What's cool on this laptop is always have fantastic keyboard, which HP claims is 92-percent of the size of a full-size laptop keyboard. Other Netbooks have been plagued by tiny Chiclet-like keys, which make typing a pain and typos plentiful. By expanding the keyboard right to the edges of the system, HP is able to fit bigger keys into the tray than other Netbooks (and even ultraportable laptops). The result is a comfortable typing experience that takes a tiny bit of adjustment (as the keys are very close together), but one that is, thus far, our favorite on a sub-12-inch notebook.

Apple MacBook

Labels: | 0 comments»

New aluminum construction looks good, feels solid; giant touch pad; attractive edge-to-edge glass on display; improved integrated graphics; backlit keyboard on some models; thinner than previous version of Apple MacBook. With great laptop comes bad things, yap there is nobody perfect except this gadget, in this version still no ExpressCard or SD-card slot; loses FireWire port; all-clicking touch pad is a bit awkward, at least initially; $1,299 now gets you a slower CPU than it did before; no matte-screen option. What's cool on it, first; it comes from Apple, cool design, and very solid.

The product physically is very sturdy, thanks to the unibody construction. Normally the chassis would normally consist of various small parts. So instead of taking a small piece of aluminum and adding more aluminum, Apple has taking a big piece of aluminum and subtracted from it. Thus creating a sturdy, yet light laptop. I have heard that the aluminum interferes with internet connectivity issues. I do have to say, unfortunately, it is true. I put the Macbook and my old PC laptop side by side, and the PC was able to pick up better frequency and more networks.

Now for the multi-touch trackpad. It is made from glass, but it feels like there is a covering on it that doesn't nearly have the friction of glass. Clicking and moving the cursor is very easy and enjoyable, with the very large surface. Right-clicking can be done with by clicking with two fingers or by clicking one of the bottom corners after being manually set. It should also be noted that only the bottom 3/4 of the trackpad is clickable.
